Important victory against Düsseldorf
The Eisbären Berlin needed to win against the Düsseldorfer EG to secure themselves a tiny chance to jump on place 7 or 8. They defeated the guest´s tremendously by 5-2. “It was a good performance by the whole team tonight”, Marcel Noebels reflected. “Our fore-checking was strong and determined. Goalie Vehanen secured the win for us”.
The home team demonstrated some good engagement and went on the score board early in the first period. Marcel Noebels carried it deep on the right wing. Julian Talbot received his set up in the slot area. Guest´s netminder Lukas Lang blocked his first shot but was unable to interfere with the rebound (05:37). Düsseldorf needed some time to find some answer. Ken Andre Olimb equalized it at 1 with 1.8 seconds remaining on the clock. He deflected Stephan Daschner´s hard and well aimed cross with his stick pad just right in front of goalie Petri Vehanen (19:58). “It was a nice pass from Daschner and I was able to use it. I got lucky that there was still some time left”, Olimb commented. “We need at least one point against the Schwenninger Wild Wings on Sunday to secure the playoffs. It will be a tough game. We need to be ready right from the start”.
The second began similar to the first. Berlin got on the board first. Casey Borer was skating at the blue line and shot it on net. Goalie Lang had an unclear sight and let the wrister slip through his pads (02:22). Few moments later the 20-year old prospect Sven Ziegler beat Lang beautifully on his glove side with a quick snapper from the low slot area (04:51). In the following the game got a little rough. The referee´s called some penalties including match misconduct on Barry Tallackson. On 4-on-4 hockey Daniel Kreutzer made it a 1 goal game converting his breakaway at 07:17.
Matt Foy renewed the two goal lead with 127 seconds into the third. He finished up a tremendous tic-tac-toe passing action by Marcel Noebels and Laurin Braun (02:07). Midway through the period Petr Pohl made it even tougher for Düsseldorf to come back into the game later on. With Travis Turnbull serving a minor penalty for hooking the Czech hammered it into the net from the right point (11:43). The remaining regulation time remained scoreless. It will be a hard disputed last game of the season against the Iserlohn Roosters´ on Sunday afternoon.
