Niederberger and Borer helped to shutout Nuremberg
The Eisbären Berlin defeated the Thomas Sabo Ice Tigers from Nuremberg 3-nothing. It was Mathias Niederberger´s first shutout wearing the Eisbären jersey. “I battled my way through” the netminder grinned after the game. “It was really important to score the first. It helps a lot when you have a lot of work. We had a strong defense today”.
After a goalless first period, in which both teams had a lot of good chances, André Rankel lit the lamp on the man advantage at 05:16 of the second. Rankel and Casey Borer passed it from tape to tape at the blue line. With Fredrik Eriksson serving a minor penalty for holding goaltender Andreas Jenike was unable to interfere with the well aimed slap shot from the point.
It was Casey Borer who made it a two goal game at the beginning of the second. He found twine with a slap shot from the top of the slot area (04:52). Nuremberg´s David Printz had the best chance to cut the lead in half midway through the period. But his lifter over Berlin´s netminder´s left pad only hit the inside of the right post.
The guest team tried everything to come back into the game trailing by 2 goals. But their catch-up hockey during the third just didn´t want to succeed. Laurin Braun´s empty netter finalized the 3-0 scoring leaving 24 seconds on the clock.
